The book was controversial especially in Western academia because it demolishes the long standing colonial myth of the Aryan invasion and gives reasons why the Harappan civilization and language had to be Sanskritik. No one refuted this but charged the authors for being Hindutva spokesmen. The authors responded by pointing out that claiming Harappan civilization to be Dravidian (Old Tamil) was like claiming ancient Tamil temples and inscriptions were the work of Punjabis
