500 _aHistorical writing in Kerala is at a low ebb not because of dearth of sources but the failure of its diligent detection and proper utilisation. The pioneering steps of early travelers and the travelogues left by them have formed the basis for historical writing of not only of ancient and medieval periods but even of the early modern period. The accounts and anecdotes left b them at times take us to the borders of fantasy but this is more owing to the mischief of the local informants on whom they reposed faith than their faulty observations. Polity and society of the people of the west of the Sahyadri were the chief centre of attraction of these travelers and no serious historian on Kerala can miss it. The present volume will help us in understanding the historiography of this polity.
