The Brahma-Sutras of Badarayana are a compilation of
Aphorisms (Sutras) dealing with the subject of ancient
Indian Philosophy, and Shankaracharya like some others
before and after him, has written his famous commentary
on the Brahma-Sutras. From the earliest times, nobody
could be considered an ‘ Acharya ’, unless he wrote his own
commentaries on the ‘ Prasthanatrayi ’ i.e. the three basic
books of Indian Philosophy, viz. the Upanishads, the Brahma-
Sutras, and the Bhagavadglta.
