Right from the Vedic times, the Indians were knowledgeable about gems. By the time of Kautilya, concepts on Mineralogy were developed as a systematic science. By the time of Varahamihira, the Mineralogical studies assumed a boarder dimension. Vagbhata's 'Rasaratnasamuccaya' was a monumental work. It was a book on the minerals and ores in
Ayurveda. Besides describing variety of distillery units for extraction of metals and minerals, the work gives details of classifications of different ores. The present work is an attempt to pass on the knowledge about important concepts on mineralogy in ancient Sanskrit texts to younger generations so that these noble traditions are not forgotten.
